Gargoyles — Four Panels for a Temple of Memory draws on the sculptural ensemble created by José Aurélio for the Torre do Tombo (National Archives), where eight gargoyles simultaneously evoke both the ways in which memory is preserved and the great tensions that run through history.
Four of these figures — The New, the Old and Death; Tragedy and Comedy; Good and Evil; War and Peace — form the basis for the four panels in this concert. The music does not seek to illustrate the sculptures literally, but rather to engage in a dialogue with the ideas they embody: memory and transformation, light and darkness, fall and redemption, irony and tragedy, conflict and suspension.
Works by Debussy, César Rafael, Schulhoff, Nelson Jesus, Satie and António Victorino d’Almeida weave a musical journey in which different eras, languages and aesthetics confront and transform themselves.
Just as the gargoyles of the Torre do Tombo preserve memory through stone, writing and transmission, this concert presents music as another way of preserving, transforming and passing on who we are.
