The visit to the Park of Pena invites you to explore, at your own pace, Portugal’s most important arboretum, where botanical collections from all continents are spread across 85 hectares of Romantic landscape. Winding paths reveal secluded corners and emblematic landmarks such as the High Cross, the Temple of Columns, the Monk’s Grotto, the Valley of the Lakes or the Queen’s Fernery, offering new perspectives, atmospheres and stories at every step — a perfect setting for those seeking nature, discovery and complete freedom to explore.
Also integrated into this route are the charming Chalet of the Countess of Edla and the welcoming Quinta da Pena, a bucolic retreat inspired by the “Ferme Ornée” style, both located in the western area of the park. The visit also provides access to the Palace Terraces, with breathtaking views over the hills and the ocean, as well as to the kitchen and the chapel, enriching the experience with an additional architectural and historical dimension.
This experience allows visitors to appreciate the unique relationship between botanical exoticism and the Romantic structures that appear in harmony throughout the park, forming a landscape of remarkable natural beauty and historical relevance. Among the many collections, the Asian camellias stand out, introduced by Ferdinand II in the 1840s and now one of the symbols of winter in Sintra — an internationally recognised distinction, as the Park of Pena has been awarded the title of Camellia Garden of Excellence by the International Camellia Society since 2014.
